I like the Sarah Palin pick for VP. I like that she was a governor and a woman and from Alaska; she seems so American. She doesn't seem like the politicians that everyone else is. She's a member of the NRA, has 5 kids, hunts moose, and lives more of a normal life. It seems like conservatives really like her too, especially after the pro-choice scares. I thought her speech was good too - seems authentic and un-Washington. She's conservative to bring in the base. She's a woman which is a slap in the face to the libs and Hill-dawg. She's young to contrast McCain. She's un-Washington to enforce McCain's change message and excite the party.
The one thing that makes me a little nervous is that she has a 4-month old baby who has Down Syndrom and 4 other kids at home. I'm afraid that she wouldn't "be her kids' mom." She seems very involved with her kids - she was a member of the PTA at her kids' schools so maybe that wouldn't be an issue.
Rush Limbaugh had a montage from Obama's speech Thursday where he said "I ...." a million times. It was a few minutes of "I see...I will....I make....etc" and then at the end "it's never been about me..." I laughed out loud - Rush is clever like that. As a side note, people didn't like Obama's speech as much as I did or as much as I thought they would.
The experience issue is not a big deal to me - I actually like it (Sean Hannity welcomes the debate too). I like governors more than senators because it seems like a governor's job is more like the president's than senator's. I like how they have to run something and are responsible for their state. Being on a city council, then mayor, then governor seems like just as good if not better qualifications than being a state then federal senator.

I really want to like her, but I'm undecided. Can you really see her being president of the United States? I, too, worry about the mom of 5 kids thing. Seems to me that you can't have a full time job and be a full time mom. Something's gotta give and it's usually the kids. ~Rebecca
It's important to me that our leaders appear to have their heads on their shoulders like normal, real people. I don't like the haughty stereotypical politician who has an intellectual understanding of the real world but no experiential understanding. In this respect I like Huckabee but dislike Obama, Hillary, and Romney. It seems like she doesn't have her head in the clouds and just seems down to earth. In that respect I can see her as president.
About the kids thing, I'm torn. Let's say the kids would get less parenting when she's in office and overall be worse off. I'm not sure how much that would happen with a caring mother and it is a great opportunity for her mother to serve and for her kids to experience a new life in D.C. Does that con outweigh the good she can do for the country? I'm not sure. Plus, both parents work now so she's currently not a stay-at-home mom anyway.
Random thoughts on Palin - I like her. She was up there with the fam during the time of the speech talking to daughter and answering questions. Now as far as her 17 year old daughter goes...is it weird that I think it's not our business? look at the personal lives of so many presidents...not exactly the best, and this is her daughter's personal life. the fact that Palin has a big family and works at the same time is only appealing. down to earth and heaven forbid we have a president whose life is like that of our own. it is hard enough I am sure for her daughter but now it is international news - been on news here all day. sad.
Agree with most of what you guys said. Although I'm still undecided. Not sure that I find it "appealing" that she has a big family and has such a time and life consuming full time job. But I love the fact that we have the opportunity to vote for a woman who does seem down to earth and not so politicky. But, let's remember that she is a politician! I hope that I have more of an idea of her stance on things after her speech tonight. That, I think, is the biggest thing for me.
Is it possible that Palin is the most interesting VP choice in my history? I think it might be. I didn't even know she existed until she was named as McCain's running mate. I'm not well connected politically... probably more than average but not as much as I should be... but she was off the radar.
I think the debates and interviews are going to continue to show that she's down to earth... I hope we can see more of what she actually believes. She really didn't say much about any policy in her speech - but it seems like her record in AK would be a good starting point to figure out what she cares about.
I thought her speech was good... I think my favorite line was "the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull... lipstick." I think that was off the cuff. I know that's not substantive, I liked it anyway.
As to her being a mom - I wonder how that will work, but I agree with Nath on this one - she's not home now. Maybe dad will lay off the snowmobile racing and fishing for a couple years and stay home. By the way, is this the closest thing to a redneck family that we've ever had on a ticket? This family would be at home at my family reunion... where one year someone shot a deer (in the camp) with a bow and arrow, field dressed it, and hung it in a tree (I'm not making that up). Know what you have at a Roberts' family reunion... one full set of teeth.
I don't think Obama's campaign could be handling Sarah Palin any worse if they were making a real effort to do it badly by the way.
-She doesn't have experience... this coming from Obama who claims that running for President makes you qualified to be President.
-Making hay about her daughter... when they could care less about those sorts of issues in real life.
-Talking about her "small town Mayor" role as not enough experience... as though none of us know that she's the Governor of a state with an 11 Billion dollar budget and 24,000 employees.
I think she's a great choice and a clear contrast to Biden... there is no more Beltway Insider in the world than Biden. I like to have an opportunity to vote for a ticket that includes a woman... I like her family very much so far... they feel like home. I think having her pregnant daughter right beside her is good. I think it communicates a few things: 1)We love our daughter unconditionally even if we're not happy about her choice, 2)We have nothing to hide.
Sorry this got so long Nath.

It's great that she came out of left field - I had never heard of her before. I thought her speech was pretty good and I love the pitbull joke. It sure rallied the base which is what needed to happen. I think her approach to build McCain up and bring Obama down was appropriate for the RNC.
I absolutely agree that Obama's campaign is handling it poorly and how it's great that her daughter is always there with her. I couldn't believe they actually sited running a campaign as relevant experience - I thought it was a joke when I first heard it. And while it was awkward seeing her family's reaction during her speech overall it is good to see a more normal family. They do feel like home.
I love your long posts.
